GONG has protested against an urgent procedure of the Law on Election of representatives of the European Parliament. State Election Commission, NGOs and public was not consulted regarding the Law. Moreover, the Law is not in line with the Constitution which grants voting right only to the Croatian citizens. Finally, all Croatian parliamentary parties on Thursday endorsed the Law on Election of representatives of the European Parliament in first reading, but opposition parties said that the bill was premature because necessary constitutional changes had not yet been made to resolve some dilemmas regarding the right to vote.

The law will regulate who has the right to vote for Croatian members of the European Parliament and who has the right to run for the European Parliament, while the number of Croatian members of the European Parliament will be determined in the accession treaty. The Croatian government estimates that there will be 12 or 13 Croatian MEPs.
