The nongovernmental election monitoring organisation GONG issued a statement on Friday to draw attention to the importance of forthcoming elections for the European Parliament in Croatia, calling on citizens to vote.

“Elected deputies will have a great responsibility to regularly report and communicate with citizens about their work and results achieved because the European Parliament is a guarantee of the democratic legitimacy of European legislation and its decisions have direct consequences for the everyday lives of EU citizens,” the statement said, noting that the European Parliament is the only EU institution that is elected directly.

Voting is scheduled for April 14. GONG called on the State Election Commission, the Ministry of Administration and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs to make an additional effort within such a short time to inform voters, and urged all those involved in the election process to observe election rules and abide by high democratic standards.
