ZAGREB, April 28 (Hina) – Commenting on the government-sponsored bill on the prevention of conflict of interest in the discharge of public office, which is being discussed by the parliament, the non-governmental election monitoring organisation GONG on Monday said the bill was “one step forward and two steps back”.

Although the proposed changes introduce some improvements to the work of the Commission on Conflict of Interest and the fight against conflict of interest as a form of corruption, some of the amendments will leave the existing legal voids and create new ones that will have to be filled by new legal regulations, and in addition, they neutralise the opposition’s role in the Commission, GONG said in a statement.

GONG therefore called on the government to reconsider its bill and to refrain from amending laws, notably ones related to the fight against corruption, without a previous expert debate.
