The non-governmental election-monitoring organisation GONG said on Sunday night that the presidential election had taken place mainly in a democratic atmosphere, with reports by citizens of the incompetence and indifference of polling committee members.
Queries by citizens indicate that many committee members are insufficiently informed of the voting procedure and show the need for systematic improvement of the election process and legislation, GONG said in a statement.
The organisation particularly pointed out the incompetence, indifference and insensitivity of some of the polling committee members as a result of their insufficient training, citing cases where polling committees failed to tell voters who were not entered on the electoral roll that they could vote on presentation of a declaration of voter registration.
GONG said that citizens needed to be better informed and that they needed competent polling committees that would guarantee them the full exercise of their voting rights.
